Could My Toenail Be Fungal?

Not every thick or discoloured toenail is caused by fungus. If confirmation is needed, I can collect a small sample of the affected nail and send it to a laboratory for PCR (polymerase chain reaction) testing. PCR testing analyzes the nail sample to help confirm or rule out a fungal infection, helping guide the appropriate treatment plan.

What to Expect During Treatment

1. Assessment – We examine your nails and discuss your goals, and if needed, collect a sample for PCR testing.

2. Treatment – The nails are debrided to help with better treatment outcomes. The ToeFX FungalBlue Serum is applied to all the nails and allowed to absorb for 5 minutes (it is recommended that all nails are treated to reduce the risk of cross-contamination). ToeFX Therapy Light is then applied to your nails for 12 minutes. Note: your nails and surrounding skin will be temporarily blue and It is recommended to wait 24 hours before washing. Blue staining will occur for approx. 7-10 days.

3. Follow-up – Multiple sessions are required for best results.

• Active Phase of your treatment plan: 8-10 back to back sessions every 2 weeks are recommended. 

• Maintenance Phase: follow-up sessions every 6 to 8 weeks are recommended to ensure no recurrence during the one-year nail growth cycle.

Treatment Timeline

Weeks 2–4: The underlying fungus is being actively destroyed at the microscopic level. You may notice the blue serum stains less heavily over successive visits because there are fewer fungal cells left for the dye to bind to.

Months 3–6: Clear, healthy nail growth becomes visible at the cuticle line. Most Active Phase treatment plans end near or before the 6-month mark (usually spanning 8 to 12 bi-weekly sessions).

Months 6–12: Significant to complete clearance is achieved as the old, damaged nail moves toward the tip and gets trimmed away. Complete regrowth of a big toenail can take up to 12 to 18 months in some cases.
